Welcome to Zethierrys — a family travel journal documenting our journey through West Africa in 2007.
We are the Thierry family. What started as a bold idea became a six-month adventure across Morocco, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Ghana, Togo, Benin, and South Africa — travelling overland through some of the most remarkable landscapes and cultures on earth.
This blog was originally published in real time as we travelled, sharing news, photos and stories with family and friends back home. We have now migrated it to WordPress to preserve these memories for the years ahead.
The Journey
We left Ghana in January 2007 and spent six months driving north and west through Africa, crossing the Sahara Desert, exploring ancient Saharan cities, meeting extraordinary people, and discovering a continent of breathtaking contrasts.
From the dunes of Erg Chebbi in Morocco to the markets of Bamako, from the Dogon Country cliff villages to the beaches of Ada in Ghana — every day brought something new and unforgettable.
