Photo Galleries

A selection of photographs from our six-month journey across West Africa in 2007. Each album captures a different place, moment or experience along the way.

Morocco

From the Atlantic coast at Agadir to the Saharan dunes of Erg Chebbi, Morocco was a land of extraordinary contrasts. We explored the ancient medinas of Fes and Chefchaouen, the mountain passes of the Atlas range at Azrou and Ifrane, and the dramatic gorges of the Todgha Valley.

Mauritania & Western Sahara

Crossing into Mauritania via the Atlantic Road, we passed through the vast emptiness of the Western Sahara to the capital Nouakchott — a city rising out of the desert. The Route de l’Espoir took us east into the Sahel.

Mali

Mali was one of the highlights of the trip. We visited the river city of Mopti, crossed to the ancient mud-brick mosques of Djenné, and spent several days trekking the dramatic Dogon Country cliff villages along the Bandiagara Escarpment.

Burkina Faso, Niger & Togo

Continuing east through the Sahel, we passed through Niamey in Niger, visited the fascinating Tamberma fortified villages in Togo, and stopped at the remarkable SOS Children’s Village in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.

Ghana

Ghana was our home base for this journey — we had been living there before setting off. Our Ghana photos capture everyday life, the beads markets of Accra, turtle watching on Ada beach, and the wildlife of Shai Hills Reserve.

South Africa

A short trip to South Africa — arriving in Johannesburg and staying at Kwa-Mbili Lodge — provided a striking contrast to the rest of our West African journey.
