The history of Essaouira goes back to the roman empire of Auguste over 2000 years ago. Then a succession of rulers (Moore, Portuguese, French, and eventually Moroccan.  Essaouira (or ‘Mogador’ as the Portuguese used to call it) prospered thanks largely to its large jewish community.  Today there are only a few jewish families left and Essaouira is turning itself into a prime tourist destination.  The old town - the ‘medina’ - is now protected by UNESCO and much efforts are going into cleaning the place and restoring some of the ancient buildings.  The atmosphere within the fortified city is amazing, a mixture of Orient, Magreb and Europe, with many craftsmen practicing their ancient trade in tiny workshop hidden within the narrow streets.  An absolute gem !

 

L’histoire d’Essaouira remonte a l’empire romain d’Auguste, il y a plus de 2000 ans.  Apres etre passee sous la houlette de plusieurs puissances, et batisee au passage ‘Mogador’ par les Portugais, Essaouira a prospere jusqu’au milieu du XXe siecle en grande partie grace a sa large communaute juive tres active dans le commerce.  Aujourd;hui il ne reste que quelques familles juives et Essaouira s’est tournee resoluement vers le tourisme.  La medina est maintenant protegee par l’UNESCO et de gros efforts sont fait pour nettoyer la ville et restaurer des batiments ancients.  L’atmosphere a l’interieur des remparts est un melange d’Orient, de Magreb et d’Europe ce qui donne a la ville ce charme unique qui attire beaucoup d’artistes. Une petite merveille !
